PHILADELPHIA: MECCA OF BLACK EXCELLENCE
How the tour came to be… I was teaching in West Philadelphia and read my students a speech from Dr. King called “What Is Your Life’s Blueprint” which was initially delivered at Barrett Middle School in the city. When I challenged my kids to get involved, a group of students answered by giving up their lunch and recess every day and using that time to read to first graders in the school. At the end of the year, those same students challenged me to get involved. That summer I began a literacy and mentoring program called Teach 2 the Core.
For the first few years, I would give inner-city high school students free literacy tutoring over the summer in exchange for them doing community service and reading to a younger child in their neighborhood. Two summers ago, as my tour company grew, I incorporated it by working with 15 inner-city high school students to research, write and learn how to present a black history tour. That tour, “Philadelphia: Mecca of Black Excellence” is named for Mekha Hairston, a former coworker, friend and amazing teacher who passed away last fall.
